Parenting is something everyone seems to have an opinion on, and sometimes people don’t even need to have children to share their uninvited thoughts on how others should raise their children.
Now a groundbreaking new TV show is going to take a closer look at 10 different parenting styles to ask the question: Which way is the ‘right’ way? Or perhaps, can you even say what’s right or wrong when it comes to parenting?
In Parental Guidance, 10 brave sets of parents will put their child-raising styles through a series of challenges. The ‘styles’ are:
- Strict
- Free range
- Disciplined
- Nature
- Helicopter
- Attachment
- Tiger
- Home school
- French
- Routine
Today co-host Ally Langdon, who has two young children, and Australian parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson guide the parents through the show as they assess and reflect on how everyone has performed the tasks, with couples weighing in on everyone else’s preferred methods.
“You haven’t seen this before. I do need to warn you, it is confronting,” Ally says to the group of parents in the first-look promo for Parental Guidance.
She then asks: “Put your hand up if you ever have smacked your child.”
We get glimpses of the families, including one that lives in a tent.
“Can they read and write?” Ally asks a man who appears to be the father of that family.
“They will read when they are ready,” he firmly responds.
Some parents make bold admissions.
“We brush their teeth with soap,” says one mother.
“We see a smack as one tool,” says another.

There will be tantrums from the kids — or as one mother puts it, “meltdowns or big feelings” — controversial statements from the parents and a whole bunch of eye-opening experiences.
There will be heartwarming moments too, such as the preview of former NRL star Sam Thaiday telling his child it only takes “one second to be brave”.
And at the end of the day, many of them acknowledge parenting is no walk in the park.
As Dr Coulson tells the group: “This is going to change the conversation about parenting in this country.”
Parental Guidance is coming soon to Nine and 9Now.
